Learning a foreign language can be challenging, especially if you cannot immerse yourself in the culture and interact with native speakers. Language courses are a popular alternative, but they can be expensive. "Picture English Dictionary" is an application that uses AI algorithms to provide users with a similar learning experience as if they were in the country of the language. The app uses over 5 million images and 30,000 videos to show the four most relevant pictures related to a specific word, making it easier for learners to understand the definition of the word.
Our brain is divided into left and right sides, with the left side serving as a language sponge and the right side serving as an image sponge. When images and videos are shown, the right side of the brain reacts first. However, most language learners only use the left side of the brain to relate a relevant word to a certain image, limiting their potential. "Picture English Dictionary" creates a learning environment that effectively distributes the usage of both the left and right sides of the brain, providing a more comprehensive learning experience.
The application allows learners to select the difficulty levels and desired word list, and they can always look up words just like using a dictionary. For English, learners can choose American or British accents, speed and tone of the spoken language, and add their favorite words to a personal list to concentrate on specific words. The app also allows learners to set the exposure rate of certain words and change the theme to maximize learning effect. With "Picture English Dictionary," learners can have a great journey in learning a new language.
The app requires access to certain permissions, such as WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE and READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE for image caching, READ_WAKE_LOCK for repetition mode, READ_PHONE_STATE to stop running the app during phone calls, and RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED to run the app after rebooting the mobile device. The only purpose of the app is to memorize English words on the lock screen.
