Stars and Planets is an interactive 3D map of our galaxy that allows users to explore the planets and satellites of our Solar System, as well as newly discovered exoplanets, asteroid belts, black holes, and pulsars. With almost 4.5 million stars, over 4500 exoplanets, and 152 satellites, this simulated view of our Universe is an excellent resource for teachers to use for instruction and for students to explore the Milky Way galaxy and space as they learn more about the universe we live in. The app is available in over 100 languages and is updated daily from multiple sources, including NASA and ESA.
The app features 3D representations of all star systems and their orbits in space, as well as black holes in binary systems, including the famous Cygnus X-1 and the Great Annihilator, which is the only binary system with a black hole and a pulsar. Pulsar exoplanets, the first type of exoplanet ever discovered beyond our solar system, are also included, as well as magnetars, a special and rare type of neutron star. Users can search for stars, planets, moons, black holes, and neutron stars by a wide range of parameters, including name, type, system type, constellation, catalog, and star type.
An internet connection is necessary to access the online stellar database as well as the wiki information. However, a subset of the database can be queried offline, including planetary and orbital data. Data is imported from various sources, including SIMBAD, The Extrasolar Planets Encyclopedia, NASA Exoplanet Archive, and Planet Habitability Laboratory.
Overall, Stars and Planets is an engaging and informative app that allows users to explore the wonders of our universe from the comfort of their own device.
